Trail cam Q&A

camouflaged camera on tree

There are many brands of trail cameras, with models ranging in price from less than $100 to several hundred dollars. Pictured is a Browning trail camera.

Q. Howdy Chip: I just read your trail camera story in the December 2023 issue of Ohio Cooperative Living magazine. I would like to buy my hubby a good trail camera that will send still photos and videos to his iPhone. What do you recommend? Thanks for any advice!

A. Hi, Mary Lisa: I’m happy to help! I’ve used a Browning trail camera for the past two years and am very pleased with it. It’s relatively easy to understand the camera’s set-up program and simple to use. In addition, it produces excellent quality still photos and video clips, and has been reliable in all types of weather. The various camouflage patterns available on the exterior are excellent, too, helping the camera “disappear” when mounted against a tree trunk. I’d highly recommend Browning. Here is a link to their website: https://browningtrailcameras.com/.

Q. Just read your article in Ohio Cooperative Living about trail cameras. Loved watching the video from Robert Bush, Sr.

 A. Thanks, Brian!  And for those readers who may have missed it the first time around, for years Robert Bush Sr. has been using trail cameras set up near downed logs spanning small streams in Pennsylvania to capture photos of wildlife crossing those logs. A fascinating, eight-minute highlight video of his can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-DeL7T-CvY&ab_channel=Bob%27sPennsylvaniaWildlifeCamera.

Q. I am trying to find out where my feral outside cat goes at night. I thought an inexpensive trail camera ($70 or less) might help me determine this. Can you recommend one for me?  Thank you.

A. Hi, John: As I told Mary Lisa Carter above, I would recommend a Browning trail camera.  Their least-expensive models begin at around $100, but that little extra amount of money, I believe, would be worth it. These cameras are so sensitive and well-made that they even detect field mice.

My son, Tom, has a trail camera set near Sherrodsville and it is so enjoyable to view the photos. The best surprise so far has been a bobcat!

Q. Just read your article on trail cameras in Ohio Cooperative Living. I caught this on my trail camera setup near Lithopolis, Ohio. Deer are certainly not camera shy around my house! I live close to the Chestnut Ridge Metro Park and got another short video of a BIG buck that looked to be about 8 or 10 points. Have enjoyed many of your interesting articles in past issues. Keep up the good work.

A. I laughed out loud when viewing your video clip, Gary, thanks for sending!  Here it is for everyone to enjoy.
