New technology debuts at annual trade show

What happened in Vegas won’t stay in Vegas, not if it concerns CES® 2016, the world’s largest tradeshow for consumer electronic technology and the biggest U.S. trade show of any kind.

Held Jan. 6-9 in Las Vegas, the 49th CES — formerly known as the International Consumer Electronics Show — introduced innovative items and electronic technologies affecting most every walk of life, including many powered by the electricity your cooperative provides.

Overall, CES showed that pretty much anything can receive a “smart upgrade” — if it plugs in or requires batteries, it can communicate with the Internet.

At the same time, some new innovations were unconnected — Whirlpool® unveiled a refrigerator with retractable shelves that can be pushed back to allow wine to fit, while Samsung demonstrated a front-facing washing machine with a special door to let users cram more clothes into it, along with a dual washing machine that washes whites in one side and colors in the other.

More than 115 automotive tech companies and nine automakers debuted the latest advancement in automotive technology. Chevrolet, in particular, revved up its new Chevy Bolt, a full-electric vehicle that can travel 200 miles between charges and costs less than $30,000.

The wide variety of gadgets and technologies showcased at CES 2016 include smartphones and all manner of related devices, an alphabet soup of all sorts of enhanced TVs, wearable clothes, timepieces, connected home technology and special remotes, drones, smart toys, virtual reality, newfangled forms of transportation — the list goes on and on.

CES 2016 took place in three separate locations, encompassing more than 2.47 million net display feet. More than 3,500 exhibitors from more than 150 countries were on hand, including delegations representing nine countries, with more than 170,000 people in attendance.

CES is owned and produced by the Consumer Technology Association™ (CTA), formerly the Consumer Technology Association® (CES).
